Metro Line 4 Opens for Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Metro Line 4 is the latest in a series of investments in infrastructure that are transforming public transport in Rio de Janeiro.

When fully operational, Line 4 will transport up to 300,000 passengers every day. It will remove about 2,000 vehicles per hour from Rio's roads at peak traffic times.

During the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which began on 5 August, services on Line 4 run from 6am to 1am on working days and Saturdays and from 7am to 1am on Sundays and public holidays.

The project has been accelerated in order to be completed in time for the 2016 Games, and will see another 300 meters of track laid each week.

"Line 4 will contribute to making the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games the best in history and will become an important legacy for the city, improving the quality of life of the people who live here," state secretary of transport Rodrigo Vieira said.

Soil nail system, an ideal anchor system for underground construction, is an environmental solution for metro tunnel projects. Especially in weak conditions, soil nail has better reinforcement effect over other anchoring systems. Soil nail system can change the mechanical property of surrounding rocks, enhance self-supporting capacity, reduce deformation of surrounding rocks and then keep tunnel’s stability.
